Transforming K-6 Mathematics Instruction

Kathy McLean, Principal
Sunnyside Elementary School
Great Falls, Mont.

Duration: 7:58 Minutes

Sunnyside Elementary School staff highlight the steps taken in the schoolwide initiative to transform mathematics instruction. Key to this transformation was Math Solutions' professional development and in-school coaching support. Teachers challenged themselves to bring their own content knowledge weaknesses to the table in order to strengthen all aspects of math instruction. Another key to success was lesson study, which provided teachers opportunities to reflect on their instruction and examine student-focused data to refine lessons and instruction to meet the needs of each individual student. As a result, Sunnyside Elementary, a Schoolwide Title I School, has increased its state assessment results; 82% of students are now proficient or advanced in math, up from 72%.
